The respective netminders had the upper hand during the first half of the contest, producing several fine saves to keep the scoreline level.
Kestrels forward Scott Jamieson eventually broke the deadline with a powerplay goal in the 34th minute to set up a tense final period.
The Capitals finally got on the scoresheet after 54 minutes and turned the game on its head to make it 2-1 just over two minutes later.
The Kestrels pulled netminder Andy Little inside the last minute but were unable to send the contest to overtime.
